Kids2College

In collaboration with the Sallie Mae Fund, Kids2College is an early college awareness program that introduces 6th-grade students to the concept of higher education by placing Georgetown University students in local elementary and middle school classrooms to facilitate college preparation workshops.

The Kids2College curriculum emphasizes interactive, hands-on activities that allow participants to explore careers and understand the educational requirements necessary to reach their career goals. At present, the program reaches out to Washington DC area schools in Ward 7. Georgetown University students selected and trained as facilitators visit the 6th-grade class in each designated school twice a week for up to six weeks. The students discuss their personal experiences of college life, pre-college accomplishments, career interests, and answer specific questions.

Semester Curriculum Outline:
Lesson 1: Education Options
Lesson 2: Career Exploration
Lesson 3: I’m Going to College!
Lesson 4: Paying for College
Lesson 5: Connecting College and Careers
Lesson 6: Career Day

The program concludes with a day-long visit to Georgetown’s campus – the Shadow Day Experience. Each year, over 150 students, faculty, and staff from our middle schools tour the campus, conduct a scavenger hunt, meet GU faculty and staff who share their college experiences, attend lectures/seminars, and have lunch with all staff and students in the Leo O’Donnovan’s Dining Hall.

I enjoyed meetings the members of the football team, the interactive nursing simulation lab, the cafeteria and playing on the basketball court
